Hi and welcome to my website!

I'm Damon Bay, a Kiwi artist and teacher based in Japan, where I have lived for over 20 years. I’m best known for my “Photojiku”, long vertical photographs printed on hanging scrolls made of Washi, a Japanese paper handcrafted by artisans.

I hold several exhibitions a year and have been featured in various TV programs, and magazine and newspaper articles. But the greatest highlights of my art journey so far are having published a book in 2016 and some of my photos being used in a Japanese postage stamp series in 2021.

My photography is about capturing the subtlety and beauty of nature, the grandeur and drama of the outdoors, and the magical fairytale world that is rural Japan.

My appreciation and love of nature and the outdoors came from growing up in New Zealand's South Island. My relationship with Japan began on my first visit as a high school student in 1991, and after a period of living in both countries, I moved here permanently in 1999. More than 20 years later, Japan still fascinates me.

My first 10 years in Japan were spent in the culturally rich Kansai region, but in 2006 I moved to rice-paddy rich Chiba, just an hour from Tokyo, where I have lived ever since. It was a massive change moving here - there was less culture and history, but more nature and space.

I had enjoyed drawing and painting since I was a teenager, but photography became my main means of artistic expression after I moved to Chiba. It began as just a quick and easy way of documenting the flora and fauna I saw, to enjoy again later. But gradually I discovered that through my camera lens, I could escape from everyday life and see into a magical world. In Chiba I learnt about Satoyama, the traditional Japanese countryside, which is the main theme of my artwork these days.

I’m fascinated by bonsai, Shinto shrines, and Japanese visual art like ukiyo-e prints and suiboku ink painting, and all these things have a subtle influence on the composition of my images.

I was introduced to Washi paper in 2016, when I was invited to do an Artist-in-Residence in Tottori, western Japan. I met local craftsmen there who taught me about the centuries-old tradition of paper making and with whom I have been collaborating ever since. Printing on semi-translucent washi gives photographs an ethereal appearance and the washi of the Aoya district in Tottori is particularly suitable for printing, as ink pigments bond well to the flat surface of its natural fibers.

I update this website regularly with photos and news, so be sure to pop in regularly and have a look at my blog. You can also find me on instagram and facebook.

Thanks and Enjoy!

Damon Bay
