カエルはどこで冬眠するのかな？
もちろんカエルの種類によりますが、今日はニホンアマガエルの冬眠の写真をご紹介します。

多くのアマガエルは里山で冬眠します。
A few weeks ago, I took my camera gear out for a walk in the countryside
to photograph hibernating frogs.

早春に里山を歩いたら、栗林がありました。
I found a field of fruit trees, chestnut trees in fact.

大きな切り株を見つけました。
Looking around, I found with lots of logs lying around.

近づいてみると、フキの花が咲いています。
Logs are perfect for tree frogs, which like to hibernate in small holes.

もっと近づくと、切り株にたくさんの小さい穴が開いているのが見えます。
カミキリムシなどの幼虫が掘った穴でしょうね。
Logs have small holes in them, made by longhorn beetle larvae.

その穴の中を一個一個のぞいてみると、アマガエルが冬眠していました。
見えますか？

同じ木の他の穴にもアマガエルがいました。
Here is another frog, in a different hole on the same log.

あっ、起きてる！でもじっとしています。
暖かい日が来るのを待っているのね。
The frog looks awake. Its eyes are open but it is completely still,
just lying and waiting for the days to get warmer. HIbernating Frogs 41 0721crop

違う木の穴も見てみよう。
I had a look in some other logs, and a tree.

穴がいっぱいあるけど、カエルいるかな？
This dead branch has lots of holes. I wonder if there are any frogs in the holes?

It sure does!

しかも同じ穴に2匹もいる！仲良しだ。
2匹のカエル、色が違うね。
It has two frogs in one hole! 
And they are different colours, ones is green and one is brown.

普通はアマガエルといえば、グリーンですよね。
Japanese green frogs are typically green, like this:

でも冬眠していたカエルは色がブラウンです。
もっと寒い時期に冬眠しているカエルはもっと暗い茶色です。
But in Winter, they turn brown to match their background.

目の色まで、茶色ですね。
Even there eyes change colour.
This one popped his head out to see what all the noise was.

桜が咲くころ、スギナが出るころ、アマガエルも穴から出てきます。
Over the next few weeks, as the cherry blossoms bloom and the ground warms up, the frogs will come out of there holes and head down to the rice paddies to breed. Won't be long now!
