Exhibition Announcement -- 展示の知らせ！
11月19日～12月26日まで、市原市で展示をやっています。
今回は40点の作品を展示しています。その内の6枚が新しい作品です。

会場は内田未来楽校と言うあたたかな雰囲気の木造校舎で、和紙の作品がとても映えます。
この未来楽校は、11月19日から12月26日まで開催されている「いちはらアート×ミックス2020＋」で市原を訪れる方々をおもてなしする「おもてなし交流プログラム」の会場の一つです。

実はこの展示は去年の3月に開催される予定でした。コロナの影響で2回延期になっていたのですがこの度急に再始動が決まり、めでたく開催となりました。いつもより準備期間が短かったため準備に追われバタバタでしたが、2年ぶりに展示ができてとても嬉しいです。お近くにお越しの際は、ぜひお立ち寄りください。

入場無料　駐車場もあります。

Pleased to announce that I’m having another exhibition this month here in Ichihara!
This one is being held in a historic wooden school building that is now owned by a local community trust.
About a decade ago, a group of local volunteers got together and saved it from demolition and turned it into a free event space and community hub. It is a beautiful sunny building with high a ceiling and dark wooden walls. My washi paper artworks blend in perfectly so I had lots of fun coming up with the layout for this exhibition.
The exhibition was originally going to held in march last year, but like most events in 2020, it was postponed several times. The decision to hold it this month was a sudden one, so getting ready in time for opening day last Friday was a bit of a rush, but it feels great to be exhibiting again after 2 years. 
I have about 40 works on display, including 6 news works. The exhibition is on until December 26th, so over the next few weeks I will share some photos and videos.

At this flat section of a small river deep in Chiba's Boso Hills, the water almost stands still.
It makes beautiful reflections in the summer when the green leaves of the plants on the ravine walls are at their lushest.

今日は、数年前に冬の朝に撮った写真をご紹介します。
この日は、私の近所の田んぼの中を走る小湊鐵道を撮るつもりでしたが、
田んぼへ向かっている途中に、この桜の木の陰や形が気になって、ここで長い間写真を撮って過ごしたため、
列車のところまで行きませんでした。
I remember this morning well. It was a cold still winter morning.
I had planned to photograph the locl diesel train that runs through the rice paddies close to my house. But on the way their I was attracted to the shapes and shadows in this graveyard.
I ended up staying here for several hours and missed photographing the train.

Some of my photos have been made into postage stamps to celebrate my city's Host-Town relationship with New Zealand.
I'm pretty happy as I've always wanted to be featured on a postage stamp. The timing feels extra special as this it was 30 years ago this summer that I first came to Japan as a high school exchange student.

数年前の冬に撮った写真をご紹介します。
早朝だったですが、雨上がりで、松の木の葉っぱに水滴が付いていて、
あさのひかりできらきらしていました。
Here is a another photo of sparkling water droplets like my last post, but this one was taken in winter. You don't see much dew in winter around here, it's too dry. This one was taken after a brief sun shower one morning at a local cemetery, the rain drops were hanging from the needles of a pine tree.

私の住んでいる市原市に、昨年和紙の専門店『紙楽』さんがオープンしました。
手すき和紙を生かした様々な製品を販売されています。
全国から選りすぐられた和紙のインテリア、アート、バッグ、ジュエリー、ギフト、ランプなどが揃っていて、とても素敵なお店です。
私のフォト軸も手すき和紙にプリントした作品なので、しばらくの間、素敵な店内にフォト軸を展示していただけることになりました。
現在、展示をできる機会が少なくなっているため、とても嬉しいです。
フォト軸を実際に見てみたい方、お近くへお越しのになられた際などに、ぜひお立ち寄りください。

A shop specialising in Washi (Japanese Paper) products from all over Japan has opened up here in Chiba recently.
There haven’t been many opportunities to exhibit artwork in the last year with Covid canceling everything, so I was delighted when the shop owner invited me to display some artworks on the shop walls.
The shop is called Shiraku, which means Paper Joy. It is a gorgeous shop, here are some photos of the shop interior.

時期外れですが、前回の暗い写真と真逆に明るい色の写真をご紹介したいです。
去年の秋、千葉県の房総半島の沢を歩いていた時
すぐ前にある流木に一枚のもみじの葉っぱが落ちてきました。
This photo is a bit out of season as it is summer here in Japan now. I took this photo last autumn. A golden maple leaf fell onto a wet log as I was wading up a small stream.

There isn't much international tourism happening at the moment, but hopefully things will return to something normal soon.

去年の夏、房総の君津市にある小さな渓谷を探検した時に撮った写真をご紹介します。
Last summer I made several day trips up remote river gorges looking for photogenic spots. This one section of narrow ravine was one of the best finds. It was dry when I found it so I returned on a rainy day to capture this small waterfall.

里山を歩いていると、木の新芽が動き始めているのが今週わかります。
後数週間で、美しいグリーンが山に戻ってきますね。

Out walking last weekend I noticed that things are really starting to look like spring.
Tree buds have started bulging and in the next week new green leaves will start emerging.
In a few weeks the leaves will look like this again.

数年前に、北海道のウトロで撮ったサンセットの写真をご紹介します。
最初はこの一羽のカモメが私の目を引いたが、ずっと見ていると防波堤のテトラポッドが冬の山々みたいに見えてきました。鳥のフンが、雪みたいと思いませんか？

A seagull on a concrete breakwater lets out a few squawks before flying off to its roost for the night.
The white bird poop on the diamond shaped concrete blocks reminded me of the silhouette of Mt Fuji capped in winter snow, and initially attracted caught my attention, but after admiring the scene for a while I realised that it was the strong contrasting colours of the overall scene that I liked.

先週、今年の初蕗の薹を食べました。今年は少し早い気がします。
田んぼはまだ色がないですが、この2週間、里山を歩いているとキジのケンケン鳴きも聞こえてきます。
山も見た感じはまだ冬ですが、暖かい日はウグイスもアマガエルも鳴き始めていました。
あと数ヵ月で里山のグリーンが戻ってくるのが楽しみです。
今日は初夏の里山の写真をご紹介します。
We have started to see a few signs of spring around here this last week. 
The days are getting longer, the pheasants and bush warblers are singing, and a few of the early green leaves have began emerging. In a few months the rice paddies and surrounding hills will look like this.

泥水の波の写真をご紹介します。
北海道の7月末。冬に育った昆布が夏になると死んでしまい、海岸に打ち上げられて波にミクサーされて、
海岸がぜんぶ昆布泥になる。臭いし、美しくないけど、この昆布スープが色んな生き物を支える。
虫、エビ、魚、野鳥、哺乳類。
A perfectly shaped wave, made of mashed seaweed.
The shores of Hokkaido turn dark brown every summer as all the dead seaweed washes ashore and gets pulped into a soup by the waves.
It's smelly and ugly but it attracts millions of small bugs which support all sorts of life for the few weeks that it happens.

ニュージーランドの写真をご紹介します。
3年前、ＮＺに帰った時、お姉ちゃんが住んでいるオークランドで見た２重虹のパノラマ写真です。
左側はニュージーランドの国旗で、右の海はワイタメタ湾です。
One evening a few years ago I was visiting my sister in Auckland and went for an evening walk and got hit by a rain shower and had to retreat under some trees while it passed. This double rainbow appeared in the sky not long afterwards.

数年前の夏、鳥取県の羽合町（はわい）で撮った写真です。
羽合町は、アメリカのハワイイと姉妹都市です。
この湾は真っ黒の丸い岩がたくさんあるため、歩くのが大変ですが、とても美しい海岸です。
Today I thought I would share another seascape. 
This one is on a rocky coastline in Tottori a few years ago. 
In summer the sea of Japan is calm and sunny. But in winter months the weather is harsh and the sea is rough. This photo was taken at the end of a quiet summer day.

私が住んでいる市原市の中心を流れている養老川の写真です。
真夏、腰くらいの深さの水の中から撮った縦長形の写真で、養老川の上流の高い崖が良くわかるように撮ってみました。
The Yoro river runs through the centre of Ichihara where I live. It is not a big river but it is long and winding so travelling anywhere in Ichihara you are sure to cross it several times.

数年前に撮ったヨシハラの写真をご紹介します。
春の夕方に撮った写真です。手前のグリーンはヨシの新芽、そして億のブラウンは前の年の枯れたヨシです。
Here's an abstract photo of a reed bed to start the year. 
The green in the distance are young reed shoots, while the brown in the distance are the dead stalks from the previous year's reeds. The photo was taken in late afternoon light on a spring day a few years back.

今までに房総半島でたくさんの川廻し洞窟を見つけてきました。
気に入った洞窟はニックネームを付けています。
今日ご紹介する写真はその洞窟の一つです。
地下鉄の形に似ているため、サブウェイと名付けました。
I have discovered and photographed so many caves now that I have started naming them. This one I call The Subway. It is about 100 metres in length, and one half of it has walls that look like the inside of a subway tunnel. The other end of it has collapsed at some time. And construction has been done to stop it collapsing further. A large corrugated steel roof has been installed. Above it is someone's vegetable garden.

よく散歩をする山のてっぺんに、いくつかの常緑のスダジイの巨木がある。
この木はその中の一つです。
何年か前から撮りたいと思っていたけど、身近すぎてずっと撮らずに時間がたってた。
去年、やっとスイッチが入って、撮影してみました！
撮って良かったと思います。気に入りの一枚目になりました。
やっぱり地元が一番ですね。
One of my favourite local trees, an old Chinquapin tree (Castanopsis sieboldii) growing beside a forest path that leads to a small shinto shrine. It is at least a few hundred years old. Chinquapins are beautiful evergreen trees. They drop leaves all year so the ground crunches when you walk under them. They grow thick and gnarly, but they are really hard to photograph because when it's misty and moody their bark soaks the moisture and turns black, making them hard to see. So I used a bit of artistic license to make this photo work, gave it lots of dreamy magic! Hope you like it, it's a lovely tree.

昨新しい洞窟写真をご紹介します。
Here's another cave photo. This cave is not very big, only 10 metres long, but it is very photogenic so when I found it I spent several hours in here looking at it from different angles and ended up with this shot looking back at the entrance where the light comes in.

昨年の北海道の一人旅の時、えりも岬で撮影した海霧。
Here are a few photos from Cape Erimo in Southern Hokkaido. I spent a week here last summer, hiking in the Hidaka mountain range and roaming the rocky coast. The sea around Erimo is well known for the summer sea fog, which at times is so thick you can't have to stop driving. On this particular morning a thick bank of fog was sitting just 100 metres off shore, ebbing and rolling like a giant wave in slow motion.

2－3年前に田んぼで撮った写真をご紹介します。
5月だったと思いますが、田んぼの稲がもうすでに濃い緑色になっていたので、赤いサンセットのいいアクセントになりました。
As the sun drops down over the horizon, the speckled clouds in the spring sky lit up brightly contrasting nicely with the strong lines of the this rice paddy.

前回は少しさみしいヒノキ林をご紹介しましたが、今日はにぎやかな林の写真をご紹介します。
これは杉林です。
杉林は明るくて、夏は湿気が多いので、
シダ植物などにとって、最適な環境です。

In contrast to my last post about cypress forests and how those trees block out all the light stopping anything from growing under them, here is a photo of a cedar forest plantation I took earlier this year. The forest floor is thick with green ferns and other plants, which flourish in the soft light that filters through the cedar canopy, and grow tall under the wind protection that the forest offers. Most of the plants that grow here are native, it's hard to believe that it is actually a man mad environment. It looks like it was meant to be.

ヒノキ林の中から見た風景の写真をご紹介します。
ヒノキ林は杉林と違って、中が真っ暗です。
地面にほとんど植物が生えません。

Taken from inside a forest plantation, looking down some rows of cypress trees to the bright light outside. Japanese Cypress (Hinoki) trees grow tall and straight and so can be grown close together. Their leaves block out so much light that almost nothing grows on the floor of a Hinoki forest, they're lifeless. In this photo you can see the clear line near the edge of the forest where trees stop and the ground is covered thick with plants.

以前にも川の洞窟の写真を何回かご紹介したことがありますが、今年も洞窟を探し見つけて撮影を続けています。今日はその一つ、小さな渓谷の奥にあるハートの形の洞窟の写真をご紹介します。

I have continued taking lots of cave photos this last year. Here is a cave I discovered recently that is very photogenic. It sits in a deep ravine with green plants hanging on the surrounding walls and dark black rock that make a prefect natural frame. The cave itself is shaped like a heart on its side, and the creek that runs through it flows over dozens of small ledges that make interesting patterns of white water over the black rock.

今日もニュージーランドと日本の共通点がある写真をご紹介します。
上の写真は北海道の襟裳岬、下の写真はＮＺのコロマンデル半島で撮りました。
違う国、しかも違う半球ですが、両方とも紫な花でサンセットですね。

Here are another two photos comparing New Zealand and Japan. Both photos were taken at sunset overlooking coastal views with purple flowers in the foreground. The first photo is Cape Erimo in Hokkaido , well known for it's sea fog. The  second one is in the Coramandel, looking out over islands in the gulf. Although I didn't realise it at the time, it is interesting to see now how similar the visual elements and composition are.

3年前にニュージーランドに帰った時、親と一緒にプチ旅行をしたときに撮った写真です。
ニュージランドの夏はこれと同じ感じの高い雲がよくみられます。
日本は田んぼの風景が多いですが、ニュージーランドは羊の牧場の風景が多いです。

Continuing on my last post, here is another photo of summer photo of blue clouds and green farm land. But this one isn't Japan, it is my homeland New Zealand. I took this photo on a short trip with my parents a few years ago. High cloud like this is common in New Zealand in summer, very different to the humid summer climate here in Central Japan, where small fast forming low cloud is most predominant.

今年の梅雨は長いですね。でも天気予報で晴れマークが見えてきました！
ここ3～4年は、今の時期、鳥取や北海道や沖縄に旅行をしていましたので、地元を楽しむ時間が少なかったです。
今年は地元をたくさん散歩をして、梅雨の里山を観察できました。
今日は梅雨らしい写真を2枚ご紹介します。
The monsoon season has been long here this year in Japan. It's looking like it will continue into early August. The long rainy season has driven up the price of vegetables in the big cities, and we are all longing for some blue skies after two months of grey, but to be honest I've kind of enjoyed the monsoons this year. For the last 3-4 years I have had busy summers, travelling to Tottori, Hokkaido and Okinawa, so I have been too busy to appreciate my local environment in June and July. Here are a couple of recent photos taken while out walking in between the rain.

みなさん、しばらくですね。お元気ですか？
先週、私が住んでいる市原市の有名な菜の花スポットを９年ぶりに見に行ってきました。
花が満開で、とてもきれいでした。この菜の花畑は地元のボランティアさん達が毎年、観光客や電車ファンのために植えているものです。去年は連作障害で花はあまり咲きませんでしたが、今年はまたきれいに咲いています。
今日、ご紹介する写真は、2011年に撮った写真です。
Hi everyone, how have you? Sorry for the long absence.
I have been working hard on a few projects which have taken up more time than I anticipated, but this week things are starting to get back to normal. It is spring here in Chiba now. Last week I went to photograph a cute little diesel train that runs through a field of rapeseed blossoms in the town where I live, Ichihara. The flowers have been planted annually by local retirees for over a decade, to make the countryside more appealing to tourists. Last year however, the rapeseed plants didn't flower and so a crowdfunding campaign was held to raise funds for new seeds, and this year the blossoms are back and looking better than ever! It is great news for the local community who suffered badly in last years typhoons.
Here is a photo which I took there in 2011.

今年は暖冬ですね。先週は寒い日が少し続きましたので、ようやく冬が来ました！と思いましたが、また暖かくなってしましましたね。天気予報を見ると来週まで気温が高めですね。菜の花もオオイヌノフグリも咲き始めましたし、このまま春が来るのではないか心配ですね。2年前の冬の写真をご紹介します。家の近くの小湊鉄道沿いのアオギリの木です。

去年撮った里山の写真をご紹介します。
この朝は市原市が初霜でした。
11月末の千葉は秋と冬の境目です。
山の木は紅葉が始めたばかりで秋を感じますが、田んぼの草はもうすでに枯れ始めて、冬らしいです。
Early winter? Late Autumn? It's hard to draw a clear line between those two, especially here in Chiba where the winters aren't so harsh.
This photo was on a chilly morning in late November when we had our first frost.
The hills were still covered in leaves, but the grasses had turned colour.
The winter birds had started arriving, but the sky was still looking autumnal.

先週、日本橋の展示にお越しいただいたお客様から驚く話をききました。
その方の親戚が、私が撮った写真の場所の近くに住んでいると仰っていました。
その場所は鳥取県の八頭町ですが、地図で確認したら本当に同じ場所でした！
全く有名な場所ではないので、お互いがとても嬉しいです。

I met a person at my exhibition who's relative lives in Yazu, Tottori.
They said that a photo I posted last year is just near where they live. They got out their phone and showed me on a map, and indeed it was the same place. Here is the photo, along with a few more photos from the exhibition.

（12月16～21日）国指定伝統的工芸品である鳥取県因州和紙の展示会が都内で開催。
書を中心に使われていた鳥取県の因州和紙が、近年、芸術アートの世界にも素材として選ばれ始めました。
藍染したタペストリーや写真作品やアクセサリーなど、アート作品が並びます。
和紙だからこその表現を是非この機会にお楽しみください。体験ワークショップもあります。

私も会場にずっといます。今回のイベントでは、私のフォト軸も販売されます！

I'm excited to announce that my artwork is finally coming to Tokyo!
This is a joint exhibition, showcasing Japanese Washi Paper at a luxurious gallery near Nihonbashi station. The washi paper I use is called Inshu-Washi, it is hand made in Tottori, western Japan by local craftsmen the same way they have been making it for centuries. One of the craftsmen who makes the washi paper will be exhibiting his handcrafted washi, as well as the woman who does all my printing. As well as digital printing, she also makes modern jewelry from washi paper, so the exhibition will be a real fusion of traditional crafts and modern art. The gallery is on the 2nd floor of the famous Ozu Washi store that has been selling washi for more than 350 years. I have always wanted to exhibit in Tokyo and this feels like the perfect way to do it. 
I will be selling artwork at this event. I am currently remaking my website so I can sell artwork, so stay tuned!

For this current exhibition, I have a new kind of print. On the windows of the gallery, I have attached nine colourful photos of maple leaves. The photos are printed on a very thin almost see-through Washi paper, so they can be seen from both outside and inside.

My exhibition opened today. Terrible weather unfortunately, but it's going to clear up tomorrow, and next weekend the weather is looking good. The fall colours will be perfect then too 😍 Thanks to everyone who came along!

来週の個展で展示するフォト軸をご紹介します。
新しい作品で今回に和紙に初めて印刷をしました。
この作品の撮影場所はとてもきれいな谷です。
とても狭い谷（千葉では谷津田と言います）なので、真夏に訪れると、山の影が田んぼまで伸びて、
時間帯によって風景が変わります。
これは午後に撮った写真です。
Here is a new photo scroll that I recently had printed for my upcoming exhibition.
Taken in mid summer on a day when the clouds were beautiful and the hills in this narrow valley created interesting shadows on the rice paddies. 
I met the farmer who tends these rice paddies, he said he is one of just two farmers still working in the valley and that he thinks he will only farm for a few more years meaning this view won't be around for much longer.

今月の下旬に、市原市の養老渓谷にて私の個展が開催されます。

今回の写真展は、千葉県の市原市からの依頼で実現することができました。
市原市の魅力である里山の美しさをより多くの方に知っていただくことが、この写真展の目的のひとつとなっています。
展示作品は因州和紙に、市原市の風景や生き物、フォト軸など様々な作品49枚を印刷したものです。
大好きな地元市原市の里山風景を、このような素晴らしいかたちでみなさまにご紹介する機会をいただけてとても嬉しいです。
お声を掛けてくださった市原市の担当者のみなさまに、心から感謝しています。
開催期間中、お近くにお越しになることがありましたら、お立ち寄りください。
養老渓谷は関東ー遅い紅葉で有名な場所で、展示の時期はちょうど紅葉のシーズンです。
会場は養老渓谷駅から歩いて５分です。 紅葉のシーズンですので、今回はもみじの写真も９枚を用意しております。

Pleased to announce that I’m having another solo exhibition this month here in Ichihara!
This exhibition will be held in the peak of the Fall Leaf Season, at Yorokeikoku, an area famous for it’s deep ravines and colourful Autumn leaves. The exhibition will be in a old Japanese farmstead that was converted into an open space art gallery. Most of the hiking trails are currently closed because of the typhoon damage we had this year, but the leaves are looking good as usual.

The aim of the exhibition is to showcase the local scenery of Ichihara, especially the beautiful countryside areas which are less well known. I will also feature some photos of local nature and I have included 9 small prints of Japanese maples to fit the season. I have 49 works in all, mostly on Japanese washi paper like my other exhibitions.
I know most of my English readers won’t be able to come, but I will put some photos up after the exhibition and thanks for your ongoing support, I always appreciate it.

Art House Asobaranotani (5 mins walk from Yorokeikoku station).
Nov 23rd 24th 29th 30th & Dec 1st
10am to 5pm  Admission free.

先月、私の作品、7点がロシアに行って来ました。ハバロフスク市のファーイースタン美術館で一週間展示していただきました。ロシアにはずっと行きたいのですが、作品に先起こされました。
展示の様子をご紹介します。
今月末、市原市で個展をやります、そして来月は東京でフォト軸を展示します。
詳しくは後ほど！
Last month, seven of my works took a trip to Russia, where they were exhibited at the Far Eastern Art Museum in Khabarovsk for a week long exhibition.
I wasn't able to join them unfortunately, but here are some photos of the exhibition.
I have two exhibitions coming up, one in Ichihara and one in Tokyo.

房総丘陵の山奥にある洞窟のアーチ。
真冬に撮ったので、常緑の木の下に雪が少し積もっているのが見えます。
Mid winter at the entrance of a stone arch deep in Chiba's Boso Hills.
Outside the entrance of the cave, you can see snow coating the ground underneath evergreen trees.

以前にもご紹介しましたが、3年前、鳥取で撮った小川の橋とシソの写真です。
緑から黄緑のグラデーションのシソの葉っぱ、と日陰にある川の暗さがポイントです。
I shared this photo already a few years ago when I first took it. Some wild Shiso herbs growing underneath a small footbridge in Tottori. I found this scene while walking early one morning when i was staying in Tottori on a month long Artist In Residency.

去年の北海道で撮った写真をご紹介します。
これは道東の霧多布岬でみた海岸です。
曇りの日でしたが、海も砂浜もすべてがグレーだったため、白黒の写真にも見えますね。
不思議な風景でした。
A simple shot from Hokaido last year. 
What caught my attention in this scene was the colours. Yes, that's right, the colours. At first glance this photo looks black and white, but  it is a colour photo. The black sand, the grey sky and the murky grey sea water were almost colourless. The dark green grasses on the distant headlands were the only colour.

I didn't have to wait long for this small cloud to roll into place, like most days in early May, there were plenty of clouds moving across the sky this day.

The plant that produces these small white flowers has some mystical sounding names including:
Fish leaf, Lizard tail, Heart leaf, Chameleon plant, Bishop's weed and Fish wort!

去年の夏に撮った洞窟写真です。
洞窟の壁の色は、苔です。
生きてる苔と枯れている苔、と剥がれている苔です。
不思議な色ですね。

Here's another secret caves of Chiba photo. 
The photo was taken in summer, and the colours on the walls are mosses in different stages of alive, dying, dead and flaking off.

Exhibition Announcement -- 嬉しい知らせがあります！ 
ご報告が遅くなってしまいましたが、今週の日曜日（8月25日）地元、市原市のアリオ市原 で いちはら×ニュージーランドホストタウンフェアが開催されます。
会場に隣接する上総更級公園・公園センターでわたしの写真展が開催されます。
「Damon Bay Photo Artキウイが見た市原の四季」
展示作品は因州和紙に印刷した、市原市の風景やフォト軸など様々な作品を30枚展示します。
初めて展示する作品もあります。

時間は10時～15時。もちろん入場は無料です！
お近くにお越しになることがありましたら、お立ち寄りください。

Sorry for the late notice, but I will be doing an exhibition this
Sunday (Aug 25th).
As part of the celebrations for the Tokyo Olympics next year, my city
Ichihara is holding a New Zealand Host Town Event at Ario Mall.
Alongside the outdoor events, I will be holding an exhibition of about
30 works in the Sarashina Park Building.
The exhibition will be photos of Ichihara City, some big and some small, including a few new works, and one of my giant 3 metre hanging scrolls.
The air conditioner will be on full, so if you are in the area pop in and say hi! Sunday August 25th, 10-3pm. Admission free.

去年の夏の北海道シリーズからまた一枚。霧多布岬で見たサンライズ。
水平線と雲の間の細いすき間から一瞬だけ日が差した瞬間。
One of the shortest sunset displays I have ever seen. Perched high on the cliffs of Cape Kirittapu in Eastern Hokkaido early one morning last summer, the sun popped up over the horizon and this thin gap in the clouds exploded with intense red light. It lasted for just a few minutes and this image is the best I was able to come up with to tell the story of it. Sunrises are early in Hokkaido in summer (4:20am), so after the sun disappeared behind the clouds and the light was gone, I was happy to be able to crawl back into my tent which was just a few metres from here.

釧路の近くの海岸に寄った小さな入り江で見た小川と船。
後ろの山はグリーンで、少しニュージーランドに似ていました。
One more shot from Hokkaido.
This old boat was parked up on a shingle beach below some green rolling hills. 
It was very photogenic, reminded me of NZ actually.

北海道のえりも岬の近くで撮った写真をご紹介します。
えりもは霧がすごくて、不思議な海岸です。
Here is a photo from a foggy coastline in Eastern Hokkaido, taken last year. 
It was a strange morning, the fog was so thick it was disorientating. 
I'm heading back to Hokkaido this summer.

北海道の野付半島の干潮で撮った写真をご紹介します。
海が引いている時間で撮りましたが、大潮のとき、この草（シバナ）は水がかかっていて見えないです。
流木とシバナのコントラストが美しかったです。
An abstract photo today.
Low tide on the salt marshes of Notsuke peninsula in Eastern Hokkaido. At high tide this grass would be under water and this dead tree (Sakhalin Fir) would be all that was visible. Bleached white by the salt and sun, the contrast with the bright greens of the Arrow Grass (Juncaginaceae) was striking.

An early morning stroll through a cedar plantation a few weeks ago. In winter these forests are colourless, but at this time of year the forest floor is carpeted in green ferns.

北海道の写真をご紹介します。
これは去年の夏、東北海道の屈斜路湖で撮ったサンセットです。
TThis is lake Kussharo, in eastern Hokkaido (The northern most island of Japan). 
I shot this photo last year in summer. It was an unusually hot day for Hokkaido and I spent most of the day hiding in the shade, where I found this window frame of leaves looking out towards the distant mountains.

黒い砂のビーチを歩いていたら、木のシルエットが夕焼け空とのコントラストがとても美しかったです。
The pastel pinks and blues of the evening sky were beautiful while strolling along this black sand beach in Southern Chiba.
