6月の田んぼはこんな感じです。
During June, farmers can often be seen walking up and down the rows of young rice plants, looking for gaps where plants have died or fallen over.
They have a handful of young rice plantlings, and when they find a gap the break one tiny plantling from the bunch and push it into the mud.
By the end of June, there are hardly any gaps and the paddies are crowded full of rice plants.
At the edge of most rice paddies, a stock of extra rice plantlings can be found for this purpose, left over from when the rice was transplanted from trays into the paddies in April.
